In May, Erica presented a “coaching of coaches” course, on behalf of SA Schools Cycling.  The maximum of 12 candidates signed up, packed their bikes, helmets, computers and notepads and were hosted at Paul Roos Gymnasium – thanks to Ben Puddu!

The course ran over 2 full days (Sat and Sun).  We ran through course material – classroom talks, discussions, examples, loads of questions.  One notable element stood out, that all participants present, were acutely passionate about their role in schools’ cycling.  New ideas were exchanged.

Then, the gloves came off, helmets were donned and bikes were wheeled outdoors, where we learnt about planning and executing skills sessions.  Games were played and may laughs were had.

Correct techniques were shown, where needed, but not only that – demonstrating how to correctness, practical vs theory.  Nothing beats being on the bike with your athletes!

Once again, nice to see so many women on this course!!  Each very much actively cycling themselves.

Pre-requisite to attend the course:

  • Must be a teacher or sports coach at a school
  • A parent can be nominated by the school to attend course
  • May not receive remuneration for individual coaching (schools can elect to pay for a school cycling coach)

There will be 2 courses run in 2019, in the Western Cape – for more information, please email Annelize Owens:
